[EAST ASIA 30 2011] Korea`s Best EAST ASIA CSR Performers

Hynix Semiconductor, Inc. Third Year in Succession of Being the Best CSR Performer in Climate Change Hynix Semiconductor, Inc. (Hynix) has paid much attention to the environment. Evidently, it was even the first corporation to publish a report on carbon management. In selecting East Asia 30, its environmental effort has been highly evaluated. Hynix participated in Carbon Disclosure Project in order to internalize the carbon management practices and strengthen the communications between the stakeholders within the organization. Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a global climate change reporting system. Since 2009, they have attained the membership in Carbon Management Global Leaders Club for the third year in succession. Since last year, Hynix has been providing carbon-reducing technologies to its small to medium business partners through various projects, such as `Establishment Project for Low-Carbon Emission Management System in Partnership` and `Businesses Stop CO2 Mentoring` project. Such efforts gained recognition and Hynix won the Minister`s Commendation from the Ministry of the Environment at the Global Green Management Excellence Awards last June. Hynix received good evaluations also in Social Contribution Activities measure on Society domain. At its core was the `One Hope per Person` campaign. The campaign targets all domestic Hynix employees and utilizes the company`s intranet. By early this year, employees who participated in the campaign raised 200 million won ($179,200) for the Community Chest of Korea in Gyong-gi and North Chung-chung provinces. By the end of this year, they will have raised about 700 million won ($627,000) through the fundraises by employees and corporate aid. The funds will be used for helping the hungry children and neglected adolescents in Icheon and Chung-ju regions through various projects like `Breakfast Hope Delivery`, `Eco-Friendly Study Session: Hope Nest` and `Science Class Visits`. Hynix plans to expand its `Hope Contribution Campaign` abroad. It is equipped with systems that reflect the employees` will to participate in Social Contribution Activities such as fund management system and online surveys on distribution preferences to promote fair executions. Amore Pacific, Inc. Actively Contributing in the Promotion of Women`s Health Amore Pacific was listed on East Asia 30 for the second year in succession. This year, it received good scores in the Social Contribution Activities measure on Society domain. Amore Pacific has been engaging in social contribution activities in women`s issues for a long time. Its major activity is the `Amore Pacific Makes up Your Life` Campaign. This campaign helps female cancer patients overcome psychological struggles and build an optimistic attitude toward life by providing education sessions on make-up, skin treatment and hair-dos. In Korea, more than 5500 women from major hospitals participated in this campaign. The campaign was also held in Shanghai, at China Shanghai Fudan University Hospital last May and October. Amore Pacific has been funding the Pink Ribbon Campaign for 11 years to raise awareness on breast cancer prevention and to underline the importance of women`s health. In particular, Pink Ribbon Love Marathon has been taking place in 5 major cities to provide useful information on breast health and promote regular health screening. Last year, 160 thousand people participated in the campaign to raise 2.1 billion won ($1.9 million) for Korea Breast Cancer Foundation. Amore Pacific received good evaluations in the Communications with Local Societies measure as well. One example is their Beautiful Fair Trade that promotes local societies and corporations to co-exist. This fair trade practice is Amore Pacific`s unique process for making material purchases that can contribute to the environment and society. Starting with the trade contract for camellia with Camellia Village in Jeju in 2010, 7 purchase contracts have been made with local societies including the organic ginseng contract with Ginseng Agricultural Cooperative in Northern Jeolla, the paper mulberry contract with Geui-san in North Chung-chung, Bamboo contract with Sa-cheon in South Gyung-sang, Bisa with Song-dang-li in Jeju, lotus seed contract with Jeon-eup in Northern Jeolla and the bean contract with Tong-il village in Paju. This fair trade is expected to catch two birds with one stone: the company will secure its material supply and contribute in local societies` development as well. Samsung SDI Operates Taskforce Team to Construct Energy Management Samsung SDI has been a leader in CSR management since it published the Sustainability Report for the first time in Korea in 2003. In particular, at the extension of its major business in secondary cell industry, its excellence in CSR performance in Environment domain has been widely recognized. It also received the Certificate of East Asia 30 for the second year in succession. Samsung SDI has formed a taskforce team titled EnMS in order to construct Energy Management System at the head branch and its manufacturing branches in Cheon-an and Woolsan. The taskforce team was to respond to the Government`s Greenhouse Gas Energy Target Operating System and to proceed with the education and construction of energy management infrastructure and process. As a result, Samsung SDI obtained the ISO 50001 accreditation on September 1st, 2011. Upon the accreditation, they improved the energy efficiency of the manufacturing equipment and established the goals for saving energy in the manufacturing process. In addition, they established the foundation for systematically managing greenhouse gas emissions and energy. It responds to the Government`s Greenhouse Gas Energy Target Operating System effectively. Samsung SDI produced great results in the measures of Communications with Stakeholders and Supply Management. It has strengthened the fair contracts with business partners and nurtured the small to medium sized businesses. Also, it has cultivated the culture of symbiosis through implementing social responsibilities in its general supply management. Through the `collaboration for symbiosis taskforce team` that is to improve overall competitiveness with business partners and support symbiosis management, Samsung SDI aids business partners in technological innovation, quality guarantee, environmental management, evaluations/education/accreditation for nurturing professional labor. Since last year, in addition to all other projects, Samsung SDI has been focusing on the implementation of the Government`s national task, Low Carbon Green Partnership Expansion Plan and the new S-Partner system in order to promote Green management and CSR in its business partners. Holding the communications with various stakeholders on the foundation, it is encouraging active participation in sustainable management. LG Electronics Two Stakeholder Consultation Meetings a Year LG Electronics is one of the corporations that endeavor to implement CSR management in their general corporate value chains. It tries to integrate sustainability practices in the general management and promote the stakeholders to communicate closely with each other. The CEO and managers have formed the CSR Committee since 2009. A consultative group within the company, CSR Council, was launched in the same year as well. The committee and the council make rules for all measures in CSR management, such as global labor policy in Labor, ethics standards in Ethics and global EESH policy in Environment measure. Further, they enforce the `LG Electronics Behavioral Code for Business Partners`, a sustainable management practice guideline for its business partners. The Behavioral Code covers 6 fields - human/workers` rights, health/safety, environment, ethics, legal mining for materials and management system. In this year`s East Asia 30 evaluation, LG Electronics received good evaluations in Communication with Stakeholders measure and Social Contribution Activity measure. Since April, 2010, it has been holding Stakeholder Consultation Meetings twice a year to accept opinions on sustainable management practices and to promote a mutual understanding among the stakeholders. Also, it has been providing opportunities for communication and participation through SNS such as blogs and Twitter. In addition, LG Electronics focuses on solving international social issues on the environment, poverty and diseases in its social contribution activities. It has been funding United Nations Environment Program`s Champions of the Earth Awards; engaging in poverty eradication projects in Africa in conjunction with World Food Program; and aiding African countries with vaccines in partnership with International Vaccine Institute. In addition, it cultivates the culture of volunteerism and giving among the employees through `Life`s Good Volunteers` Group` and `Life`s Good Day Contribution`. The former allows employees to contribute their talents and the latter provides affordable lunches on the 4th Friday every other month. Kia Motors Water-saving Lifestyle and Fair Water Treatment Water makes up 70% of a human body. As important as it is for humans, water cannot be replaced with anything else. Kia Motors understands the value of water and puts a significant effort into activities to save and protect water. In this year`s East Asia 30 selection, Kia Motors` endeavor was highly evaluated. Kia Motors promotes its employees to save water in everyday lives and continues to invest in facilities that improve the water use efficiency. In particular, it pays much attention to the water treatment process in manufacturing vehicles. The dirty water from the manufacturing process is filtered to meet the strict standards before releasing it back to the environment. The treatment minimizes pollutant release. It continues to maintain the treatment facility in good shape and make improvements. The concentration level of the released water is monitored for 24 hours a day in order to prevent environmental accidents. As a result, their levels of Biological Oxygen Demand, Suspended Solids and Chemical Oxygen Demand reduced by 25 to 46 percent in comparison to those of 2003. Kia Motors produced good results in promoting communication among stakeholders as well. They made remarkable progress in sound labor relations in 2010. It endeavors to cultivate an enjoyable and creative corporate culture by spreading New KIA movement that encourages employees` pride and the liveliness within the organization. In addition, it provides various aids to others to grow together with business partners. It has opened `Social Contribution Centers` at 3 domestic factories in order to promote sharing and communication in local communities. It will utilize such experiences in social contribution in improving the brand value by extending their activities to the global market.
