Breakout Session - Future of Energy in East Asia In March, Fukushima nuclear accident shifted the public image of nuclear power worldwide. In the break session ¡®Future of Energy in East Asia¡¯, participants discussed the effects that Fukushima accident had on Japanese society and the current status on adopting renewable energy in China, Korea and Japan. On the panel were 5 energy experts from Korea, China, Japan and the U.S. Andrew Dwit, a professor at Rikkyo University of Japan, first put up a presumption that ¡°After Fukushima accident, a new interest group on the renewable energy arose to compete with the existing interest group.¡± H added, ¡°This phenomenon is a microcosm of the situation that the world is about to encounter.¡± Lee Sung-ho, the vice president of Korea Photovoltaic Industry Association, said, ¡°World¡¯s installed renewable energy capacity is steadily increasing, exceeding that of nuclear power. In contrast, Korea lacks of technologies and its domestic market is too small.¡± The panel also encouraged raising social awareness on energy issues. Ma Sheng-hong, a professor at the Institution of Electrical Engineering, said, ¡°Fossil fuels are being depleted. Media needs to talk about it more proactively and bravely.¡± He added, ¡°It is weird that China has made it cheaper to use electricity for heating than oil, while promoting saving electricity. Under such circumstances, energy related problems will not get sufficient attention.¡±
