Breakout Session 1: SRI in East Asia

As unethical management of financial institutions was a major culprit of the recent global financial crisis, social responsibility has become more important. It is even more important from the perspective of investors. The global financial crisis served as an opportunity to confirm that information on environment, society and governance (ESG) should be necessarily considered to protect earnings of investors. Such a series of events contributed to increased interest in social responsibility investment. Still, there are critics that “social responsibility investment brings only a low level of earnings” or “it is against duties of trustees” with continued concerns about uncertainty.

Breakout Session 2: Collaborating Corporate and Social Enterprises
Creating Shared Value of Michael Porter which attracted attention of many companies last year is a concept of social enterprises, which perform business activities to benefit both business and society. In the similar context, profit-making enterprises pay an increasingly higher interest in social enterprises. As part of the business eco-system, many businesses participate in the effort in seeking cooperation and shedding new light on social enterprises as the right direction for the business eco-system, rather than providing simple support.

Breakout Session 3: Developing Social Responsibility through Media
In 1996, the world was shocked by a photo of 『Life Magazine』 where a Pakistan boy is making a Nike football. The article on child labor of Pakistan made many people in the world agonize over what are right corporate activities and what responsibility is entailed. One of key corporate social responsibilities is to disclose its activities and performance to stakeholders. This is where media plays an important role as it should take a careful approach to CSR along with its unique social responsibilities of media such as credibility of reporting, freedom of express, compliance with reporting ethics and diversity of contents. In particular, Korea, China and Japan have the process of corporate formation and development, quite different from the West’s, a situation which requires neutrality and cool-headedness more than others.
Young-myun Lee, Professor of Business Administration, Dongguk University who is one of the Korean specialist panels for East Asia 30 will lead the session to take a look at the current status and the future directions of media’s roles in CSR including media’s reporting and attitude and its effort in promotion of CRS in Korea, China and Japan.

Breakout Session 4: Doing Business as Cooperative Enterprise
Since the 2008 global economic crisis, cooperatives have emerged as a new alternative to drawbacks of market economy. As an economic solution to issues that nations and markets should address, cooperatives and social economy have received attention. Cooperatives experts say that cooperatives are a business model developed within market economy just as corporations and even more effective than capitalistic business models in certain areas.
The session will serve as a venue to ascertain that cooperatives are a successful, innovative business model based on values through specific cases and to discuss tasks to be done for such cooperatives to lead to successful business.
Jin-do Park, Head of Chungnam Development Institute which have actively generated research outcomes to promote social economy will take the facilitator role.
