Digital platform-based labor is on the rise globally, raising issues of social protection of platform workers. Platform workers can be characterized by two elements. Firstly, they are likely to be located between dependent employees and the self-employed in terms of employment status. Secondly, their income can be technically tracked as they work on the digital platform. Bearing these two characteristics in mind, participants of Breakout Session 5 will discuss how an adequate labor and social protection system can be built for the digital platform workers.

In every corner of Seoul, there are citizens concerned about global environmental problems, live new values, and dream of transformation. They are the very people who live a minimum-waste lifestyle, take part in local energy transition initiatives, and build new forms of communities. The Seoul Institute, which examined the lives of citizens engaged in the transition initiatives, will present the outcomes of “the citizens’ challenges and experiments.”
In Part 1, the institute will share the results of the Transition Study and the citizens’ cases. A wide variety of data and examples will be presented, along with stories of personal experience. In Part 2, the meaning and values of the transition initiatives will be discussed with the aim of providing new ideas for the times we live in.
